Digitalization takes away people’s jobs – headlines like these appear again and again in the media landscape and are often discussed theses in the relevant political talkshows. The fact that digitalization can make people’s work easier is usually not a possible option to discuss. First, a complex machine or system that has been assembled from many individual parts and combines several technologies will not be able to be repaired by a robot in near future. Secondly, writing the subsequent repair protocol is an enormous effort for the fitter, for which he actually has no time. This is exactly where the digitalization of industry comes in, which regards the human being as the centre of the action and as its central figure.
Repair reports are important for fulfilling your duty of documentation
When a trained specialist is called upon to repair a machine or plant, his experience and technical know-how are the most important factors. Why does an error occur and where is the cause to be found? This is exactly what the fitter knows, he thinks about the problem and finds the right solution. In addition to the primary goal of getting the machine up and running again as quickly as possible in order to keep production losses to a minimum, secondary economic aspects also play a role. This concerns warranties, warranty cases and the documentation of machine life. Similar to our patient file at the doctor’s, all irregularities that occur in the machine’s “life” are noted in the accompanying book.
Digital repair protocols make work easier
A digital repair protocol offers the fitter an enormous work simplification here. On his mobile device, a smartphone or a tablet, he can document all his work steps during the repair and even add photos or videos – for example, to explain a fault and its correction for other repair cases. He can also easily note which spare parts were needed, what was replaced and what was only repaired. A valuable knowledge memory with many tips and tricks is created automatically. By integrating the repair protocol directly into the repair process via the mobile device, the time for writing a repair protocol on paper is automatically reduced. Another advantage of the digital protocol over the paper protocol is that it is always easier to read and clearer to understand, as unneeded parameters can simply be omitted.
Many advantages and less paper
Each protocol can be individually tailored to the repaired machine and is therefore much more meaningful than, for example, a pre-printed paper protocol on which there is no room for special features. The finished digital repair protocol can then be stored in the digital assistance software of the machine manufacturer or service provider as well as in the system of the machine operator. This means that all departments involved can later access the document, e.g. when it comes to warranty claims or machine documentation. The log can also be used as a working aid for subsequent maintenance work on the same machine or repairs to similar machines. The digital repair log is only one of many proofs that the digital transformation of industrial productions primarily involves the relief of employees and not their workplace substitution.
